In the newly independent India of the 1950s, Lata must choose between three suitors. Against a backdrop of religious tensions, forbidden passions and family intrigues put traditions to the test.
Lata’s mother, a young and independent college student, has only one thing on her mind: finding the perfect husband for her daughter. But Lata is determined to choose her own soulmate… Just like Maan, the son of a respected politician and a family friend, who falls in love with a courtesan older than himself. Amid these families in turmoil, an entire country is reinventing itself. Created by Mira Nair and based on the novel by Vikram Seth, this sweeping family and love story delves into the religious tensions and social upheavals of the era and paints a vibrant portrait of an India in the midst of transformation.
