In presence of
Marine Atlan, Monday November 2.
During a school trip to Italy, a class of Latin students grapples with the first feelings of young love and questions of identity. A sensitive coming-of-age journey.
Marine Atlan paints a vibrant portrait of the younger generation in her debut feature film, which won her the Grand Prix at the Critics’ Week in Cannes. Setting out to explore Naples and Pompeii in the heat of summer, the students in Ms. Mercier’s class let themselves be carried away by the tide of their emotions. Among the students, Suzanne tries to find her place within the group, Jame uses his charm to his advantage, while Toni seeks to reconnect with his family history. Thanks to the spontaneity of the young non-professional actors, the director captures with deeply moving lyricism the turmoil of adolescence, from the awakening of desire to youthful impetuosity, set against a splendid backdrop of gentle melancholy. Renowned for her work as a director of photography, Marine Atlan has collaborated on films by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, Carmen Jaquier’s Thunder, Iris Kaltenbäck’s The Rapture, and Alexis Langlois’ Queens of Drama (GIFF 2024).
