Part colorful parody of the Bollywood style and part psychological portrait of the couple, the infectious joy of the celebration permeates this vibrant portrayal of a society steeped in both tradition and modernity, a film that earned the filmmaker a Golden Lion at Venice. “We’re used to a lack of privacy, to rooms being crowded with people, and to people sleeping on mattresses”, comments Mira Nair. “Monsoon Wedding captures this reality. The twists and turns of the story stem from the fact that we don’t know what it’s like to book a hotel room when you’re a family!”
