In the mid-17th century, three men set out on a perilous journey through inhospitable lands to deliver the portrait of the Infanta of Spain to her future husband: the young Louis XIV.

Geneva-based artist and filmmaker Pauline Julier has teamed up with stage director Nicolas Chapoulier to create a debut feature-length fiction film that offers a modern and introspective reinterpretation of the adventure film. In the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War, Alejandro, a young Spanish nobleman with a thirst for discovery, is chosen to accompany two French soldiers as they transport the portrait of Louis XIV’s young fiancée. Their future union is meant to seal a lasting peace, but beyond the hardships of nature and roads littered with marauders, the journey of these three men will not leave them unscathed. A thought-provoking reflection on the early stages of so-called modernity in the face of an old world that remains untamed, set against breathtaking landscapes.
