Hirokazu Kore-eda tenderly portrays the touching friendship between Fujino and Kyomoto, two young girls bound by their passion for drawing and driven by the dream of a lifetime: to become manga artists. A gem from a filmmaker who is a regular at GIFF, presented as a Swiss premiere following its world premiere in competition at the last Venice International Film Festival.
Already adapted for the screen as an animated film in 2024, the best-selling manga of the same name by Fujimoto Tatsuki, author of Chainsaw Man, has found in Kore-eda Hirokazu the perfect director to subtly adapt his bittersweet story about childhood dreams and their disappointments. Fujino, a young girl admired at her school for her drawings, finds herself upstaged by Kyomoto, an introverted but no less talented classmate. From this rivalry blossoms a profound friendship that, over the course of the seasons and then the years, will be nourished by their love and devotion to their art and help them face the challenges that life will place on their sinuous path, yet paved with sweet aspirations. An intense whirlwind of emotions, brought to life by four prodigious young actresses, immortalized in sublime 35mm film.
