Set in the wake of the 2025 Los Angeles fires, Out of the Ashes takes us deep into the heart of the devastated neighborhoods. An immersive documentary featuring footage of the sites and firsthand accounts, between memory, loss, and reconstruction.
In January 2025, wildfires in Los Angeles ravaged thousands of homes and left entire communities in a state of lasting upheaval. Directed by Rory Mitchell and Nonny de la Peña, Out of the Ashes takes us back to the heart of the devastated neighborhoods through footage shot in the weeks following the disaster. Destroyed homes, personal belongings, and residents’ testimonies come together to form a spatial memory of what has been lost, even as questions of reconstruction are already taking shape. An immersive documentary about loss, memory, and resilience, winner of the Venice Immersive Special Jury Prize in 2026.
