While visiting her parents' house, Sarah notices that her mother, Midge, is acting differently. The doctor is certain: she has Alzheimer's disease.
After a process spanning about ten years, Canadian director Leah Nelson finally presents her adaptation of Sarah Leavitt’s 2010 graphic novel, brought to life through traditional animation that transcends the original work’s style. Sarah, a young, outspoken queer illustrator, juggles her job at a magazine with her tumultuous love life. While visiting her family in Maine, she is forced to face the reality that her mother’s health is deteriorating and that she will have to be there for her during this difficult time. Masterfully harnessing the possibilities offered by the art of animation to express complex emotions, the filmmaker portrays the gradual loss of a loved one with accuracy and sensitivity in a film that is undeniably moving, luminous, and deeply human.
