Sick and isolated in the mountains, Hsiao-Kang is visited by his late mother and a mysterious ghostly neighbor. A contemplative virtual reality story about loneliness and loss.
Sick and isolated in the mountains, Hsiao-Kang is visited by his late mother and a mysterious ghostly neighbor. A contemplative virtual reality story about loneliness and loss.
In an abandoned house deep in the mountains, Hsiao-Kang is recovering from a mysterious illness. His deceased mother visits him and cooks for him, but he cannot taste her food. A ghostly woman lives nearby, yet she, too, is unable to enter his life. Only a fish becomes his confidant. With The Deserted, Taiwanese filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang brings his contemplative cinema into virtual reality for the first time. Presented in competition at Venice VR in 2017, this 55-minute work weaves a ghostly, silent narrative about loneliness, absence, and the connections between the living and the departed.
