Why are women still in the minority in competitive video gaming, or esports? Through the stories of professional female gamers, She Kept Playing explores the stereotypes and obstacles that mark their journeys.

In Europe, women account for nearly half of all video game players, but only 7% of competition participants. In She Kept Playing, Shana Meinecke explores the mechanisms that fuel this imbalance, from gender stereotypes to misogyny. In virtual reality, viewers experience short stories inspired by the testimonies of professional female gamers and the obstacles they’ve faced throughout their careers. Drawing in particular on the experiences of Kayane and Loupiote, the work also highlights those who are paving the way today for a new generation of female gamers.
